Another good way of telling is to see if there are a lot of check cashing stores or pawn shops around. If there are then it's probably not in the best of areas.

lec1219, wow! You must be a big risk taker!

I would never decide where to live without visiting first. If you don't plan to visit first, I would listen to the advice on this website, but I still wouldn't decide on an apartment even if it is only temporary...and even if it is in the Arrowhead area. If I were you, I would come to Phoenix and plan to stay a few days (or more) in a hotel to find the apartment complex that fits your own personal "safety" level. What one person feels is safe can be different to another person's rating. Getting advice on here is good, but seeing the apartment complex and the people who live there for yourself in person makes all the difference in the world. Pictures of apartments (and homes) on the internet can be deceiving at times. If you decide to choose an apartment without visiting first, I would definitely only get it for a month. And, then you have the option to move if you don't like it. Best wishes in whatever you decide to do!

Another great website for asking these types of questions is AboutDOTcom. Just go to the Phoenix forums. Judy can answer everything you need to know and there are many "old timers" and natives that try to help others. Good Luck!

This name sounded familiar so I looked it up online. I checked out this apartment about 4-5 weeks ago. Unfortunately once I found a place I threw out all my notes. If I remember correctly, I thought the apartments were okay, but nothing special. The area seemed safe. I think the buildings for this community are split between both sides of the street, so make sure to ask which side you would be on and where the amenities are (pool, gym, mail boxes, etc.). There's another apartment next door to Sage Stone called San Lagos that I liked better. Nicer property, nicer staff. But of course, it's all relative. My personal preferences may be different than yours.

I also want to throw in a plug for Laguna at Arrowhead Ranch. It's on N. 75th Ave, right off the 101. If I didn't choose North Scottsdale, I would have rented here. It's a smaller apartment community and had the most wonderful staff. The rent is very reasonable, and a better deal than Sage Stone. The main drawback is that it can be a little difficult to get out of the complex to head south on 75th, especially during peak traffic times. Let me know if you'd like more details.

I should add that rental prices you see online can be deceiving. I think when I visited, Laguna had just lowered their prices on 1 bedrooms and it wasn't updated online yet. Also make sure you call up and ask for the current specials as well as the exact price of the units available. For example, a floor plan may start at $945, but because there's only one unit available and it overlooks the pool and golf course, you'll actually be paying $1095. Best of luck with your move!

It's not a terrible area (43rd ave/Bell), but you could do better. I checked them out online and found they have 3 bedrooms for just under $1000. I find that to be cheap for a 3 bed, but that's just me (others would find it expensive). It depends on what you are looking for. If it's a nice, safer, "luxury" type apt you are looking for than you may want to go more north about 2 miles. I'm picky and always looked for something that was at least $950 or more for a two bedroom, then I know I'm in a good place.

Hey there to the original poster. Have you checked out the apartment ratings site yet? I used that and based on the ratings moved to an apt. in Chandler sight unseen!! It was a positive experience. We also had a short term month to month rental because we were house hunting. This was in the middle of the re frenzy heading upwards.

Anyways, the complex was in Chandler, Az. Reflections of Gila Springs or Gila Bend, I think. One thing I paid attention to was the photos of the complex. Were there swing sets? Or did it look like it catered to a more of a single crowd, that type of stuff.

Much success to you, enjoy your PT clinical!!
