I am going to stick by my original statement and say that you have nothing more to worry about in Phoenix than you would in any other city in the USA. Sorry folks, but every single city of population 100k+ has gangs and drunk drivers.

Do not be "afraid", just be aware, and do not allow yourself to become complacent. Do this and you will be fine in any city in the US. I'm out.

Truth, and very good advice.

Phoenix is much safer than Memphis, no question about it. There is no area in Phoenix that is as rough as the rough parts of Memphis. Not even Maryvale or the rough parts of South Phoenix. Chandler is perfectly fine. Despite what one or two posters stated, you really have nothing to worry about as long as you use COMMON SENSE and don't deliberately do anything to attract unwanted attention. Violent crime here is low compared to almost any established city out east, and especially compared to other cities of its size.

This should be a bumper sticker. It sizes everything up in a short and sweet manner!

Yep, that pretty much sums it up. With all the conveniences of a large city come the not so good aspects like crime, gangs, traffic issues, pollution, etc. Phoenix is no exception, although the city as a whole is generally safer than many cities on the east & west coasts when it comes to violent crime.

But burglaries and property crimes are on the high side. Also, quite a few reports of shootings in some parts of Phoenix (mainly Maryvale & south Phoenix), but the city has always been high in property crimes for some reason. I never could figure out the reason.
