My dad is thinking of moving to one of these cities because of how expensive Scottsdale is (hate it here, full of fake people and judgmental folks)

So are both of these towns nice places to live in? Where are the ghetto parts to avoid? Are the people friendly?

Not really any ghetto areas in either. Homes in Gilbert will generally be somewhat cheaper than the same floorplan in Chandler. If you don't mind the commute, however, you can find the same floorplans for even less money in Queen Creek/San Tan Valley. East Mesa may also be an option for you as well.

Interesting. I'm in north Scottsdale, which has more of the reputation of snobbery, and haven't experienced any of what you mentioned. It's really so bad that you're considering moving? That seems pretty drastic.

Chandler and Gilbert are both nice family suburban cities. Both Chandler and Gilbert are highly regarded and they're easily two of the best cities to call home in the Phoenix metro area. The people are pretty friendly I mean you have your snobs and what not like anywhere else but generally speaking both cities are very welcoming. As far as ghetto areas go both cities are fairly new and largely middle/upper middle class and neither have anything remotely ghetto. A lot of people are quick to say avoid Arizona Ave in Chandler between the 202 and Warner Rd and Chandler Blvd from Arizona Ave to McQueen Rd. It's just a slightly lower income area but it's not gangbanger land by any stretch of the imagination it's just heavily latino in that area and that scares people for whatever reason but you can drive through those neighborhoods any time of the day with no worries. Other than that small area the rest of Chandler is fine and Gilbert has absolutely no areas that could be considered ghetto. Everything in both cities is pretty much new. A house that was built in the 90s is considered old so that tells you how new everything is.
