I don't have credit card right now so can't buy tickets online, so have to pay cash at the gate. What airline would give me the best rate at gate?

No airline will be the cheapest 100% of the time; you have to compare the fares of each airline. US Airways and Southwest offer nonstop flights from Sky Harbor to Oakland, so perhaps you can start with one of those two.

No debit card either? Pre-paid debit card an option?

Paying at the gate is going to cost you much more for a confirmed seat. Flying standby would likely be your best option. I would pick Southwest for that.

Or, go online and find out what the fare is, with tax, etc. Go to the grocery store and get one of those Visa gift cards and load it with enough money to pay the whole fare. Then, go online and use the card to buy the ticket. BE SURE there is enough money on the card. There's no "waiting for a ticket". Starting 24 hours before departure, you print out your boarding pass.

As much as four times more. You are not looking for the cheapest if you are buying at the gate.

Why would you have to wait for tickets? If you buy online, you get the ticket instantly. Go get a pre-paid debit card and buy online.

if you must go asap, you'll pay more than if you can wait for 14-21 days.....the bus is another option, I suppose, if you must go now and want to save a bit.....you could also just go to the front ticket counter at OAK one morning (Tues, Wed, and Sat are best), smile, and politely discuss your request and see if stand-by will work for some discount.....

Southwest sells over 70% of their tickets on their state-of-the-art website, which certainly helps explain why they fly more folks domestically year-after-year than any other airline; 2013 marked their 5th straight year at #1 in that category

Get yourself a debit card from American Express (far and away the best one in existence), and since you're in a real hurry get an Amex Bluebird Card at most WalMarts.

It would be extremely foolish not to buy your ticket at least 14 days in advance unless you want to pay well over $600 roundtrip.
