Hola All,
I want to ask you native phoneticians what is the best routeto obtaining state, city, or county employment? I have been applying to thesetypes of job for YEARS in the phoenix metro area and haven’t gotten any callsback. I am qualified for the positions I apply to, but still I receive no response.I attribute some of this to my out of state address and phone number, but that can’tbe the entire problem. My husband has received numerous call backs from privatecompanies in the valley and has even had an over the phone interview. Soooooowhat is the deal with the state, city, and county municipalities? Do I need to knowsomeone to get a call back?

I don't think you can generalize one answer about why you have not received calls back from the various entities you apply with. No, you don't need to "know someone", usually, if your resume/application makes you look like a good candidate for the job. As far as how the out of state address or phone number affects things, I can't tell you. But, it's pretty unlikely that you would be hired for any position without an in person interview (which would be at your expense).

An in-person interview wouldn’t be an issue (if I ever getthat far) but sometimes it’s better to know people and network in order to getcertain positions. An exceptional resume, work experience, and educational backgroundare great, but sometimes knowing a current employee or someone else is beneficialas well. I just wanted to know if this areaworked this way as well.

As a former state employee, I can tell you that azstatejobs.gov is the only way to apply for state jobs. And your resume is very important. It must contain key words in your introductory statements corresponding to the job you want. Out of state is not so much a problem as I know people who have obtained employment this way, although actually being here is much more likely than not. And, if you do have contacts within the organization you want to work for, yes it will help you to contact them and nicely ask about openings. Also, keep in touch with these people because openings change rapidly. Now, if you want to work for CPS and have a degree, there is probably a job waiting for you !

Thanks for the informative post. I currently work for DFS which is Delaware's CPS. I've applied to one of those postions, but haven't heard anything as of yet. Anymore suggestions?
