We live in Charlotte, NC and find that flying out or Raleigh is usually cheaper. We just bought tickets to Phoenix for $220 RT.

Check allegiant out. Not sure if they fly to your airport but we fly them to Mesa from Peoria, IL, Moline, IL and Cedar Rapids, IA. Super cheap (sometimes less than $100 each way), direct and reliable. You won't be traveling in the lap of luxury but no worse than a typical coach seat on one of the big airlines. The great thing is that they fly into a small airport, Mesa Gateway, which means that it is much easier to get in and out of. Check them out!

Try Mesa/Gateway airport and you should find cheaper flights. Remember, things were expensive due to Spring Training and nice temps. This is peak season out here. Prices will most likely go down when the temps hit triple digits and hotel prices drop.

Speaking in generalities, prices are usually higher from the middle or end of January, until spring break and spring training are done. You can find good airfares from time to time, but they are not always on the days that people need to fly. Usually airfares drop sharply before and after major holidays, because people travel around the major holidays.

I'm booking some of my normal commute flights into later April and May, and they are already getting much cheaper.

Edit: Also look every day for a week, and look several times each day. Prices change frequently; sometimes by the hour.

Even if you find a cheap flight, they will probably nail you on luggge fees, upcharge for a seat that isn't the middle, give you a horrendous departure, layover and arrival time...they really know how to stick it to the traveler who attempts to save.

There is also a lot less competition than 10 years ago with airlines such as AirTran, Midwest Express, ATA, Northwest, Continental, and now US Airways either bankrupt, merged, or in the process of merging with another carrier. Less competition = higher prices and fewer flights.

Thanks for all of the tips....however frustrating to see fares coming to Phoenix no lower than $400.00 and it connecting!!!!...I have registered with Airfare watchdog...Hopefully fares will fall a little more...I do realize that for some $400 is a 'drop in the bucket'....but for others not so much.

If I was in Charlotte, I'd check out airfares from GSP, GSO, and RDU. I believe of the 3, RDU does seem to have the lowest fares.
