We're moving to Phoenix from Texas and would like to buy a 5 to 10 acre tract of land to build a home on within 30 miles of the city. Small acreage is readily available in Texas- what can we expect to find outside of Phoenix?

We have wide open spaces, but they are owned by the government (state, feds, Indians, etc...). So it generally seems like you are either in town or out in the desert that nobody is allowed to live in. The two places that I know that might fit the bill would be way out west around Tonopah or north around New River.

Agree...I would check in the New River area...last I heard they were minimum 5 Acre plots (Carefree Highway/7th Street area...not North New River) but I am sure there are people on here with more current information (that was 15 years ago or so). You also may be able to find something in South Chandler/South Gilbert/Queen Creek area...you say 30 miles from the city...if you mean the actual City of Phoenix you are going to have slim pickings.

Well - there are plenty of plots down that size down here on the outskirts of Casa Grande (nothing that big in town that I can think of) - but yeah, its about 45 miles to DOWNTOWN Phoenix, but it is only about 30 miles to the suburbs of Phoenix (Chandler, Tempe, Gilbert).....

Do you just want some space between neighbors? Or are you wanting to have animals or crops on the land? This might affect the location(s) where you should be looking.

This is not the best place to be doing that. As someone pointed out, so much of the land is public land. What is not is readily available but often has no electric service. When it has utilities (electric) and good access it gets pricey. Where it is cheap it is often trashy people on trashier lots. You might consider Rainbow Valley which is an area as you describe. It is generally south and west of the intersection of JackRabbit Road and Elliot in the far southwest part of the Phoenix area. There are also many, many 3 acre parcels near Maricopa, AZ south of the city.
