As an offshoot of another recent thread, I'd like to reach out and get some info on local restaurants that excel in vegetarian and/or vegan food. They don't have to be totally meat-free locales, but I like a little more effort put into the veg options that salad/pasta/veggie burger/boring sandwich.
I moved here from Seattle a few months ago, where amazing veg food is everywhere! Now that I'm settled in I'd like to do a little more exploring. So far I haven't been blown away by my options in the area, but I'm sure there's more out there.
I've gotten a little bored of American cuisine in my time here, so I'm looking for places that will do more than a veggie burger, pasta dish, or American-style pizza. I LOVE LOVE LOVE produce and appreciate a restaurant that loves it too!
Other than no meat, I'm pretty much game to eat anything, and I am particularly fond of South/SE Asian (Thai, Vietnamese, Indian) and have been craving Ethiopian food since I left Seattle. I also get weary of restaurants that try seem to try and substitute meat with cheese--come on, get creative!
What are your favorite places to get a good meat-free meal in the area? Any particular dishes that really stand out?

wow, there's a bunch of them.

Some of our favorites:

If you're looking for Indian food, there's a great veg, mostly vegan, buffet at the Udupi Cafe in Tempe. Excellent quality Indian at a really good price. Don't be put off by the fact that it's a buffet. They also have a full menu also.

For Thai, while it's not a veg place, we really love the green curry with tofu at Line Thai in Sun City.

For sushi, Ah-Hai Sushi in Goodyear off of Cotton Lane has a great "happy hour" that runs everyday as I recall from 4:30pm to close and they have really good/cheap vegetable rolls for under $2 as I recall. We order a bunch of variety and make our dinner there sometimes.

Loving Hut(we go to the one in Glendale) is one of our favorites. Asian inspired dishes/high quality food. Lunch they have $5.95 specials. The soup dishes are fresh and delicious but their whole menu is excellent with quality ingredients.

There's much more but I'm trying to stick to the things you seem to be interested in and what we've tried/like.

You also might want to look at this site that my wife just reminded me of to search for veg places, find reviews, menus, etc.

Found this Ethiopian place in Phoenix searching on happy cow though never tried it.

I like the Cutting Board in Mesa. Whole Foods in Tempe has amazing, fresh smoothies and the one in Chandler has a veritable food court.

True Food has already been mentioned, but is really good. I've also heard good things about Pomegranate Cafe.

Here's a link I just found in AZCentral. Top 10 vegetarian or healthful restaurants in metro Phoenix

I am not a vegan so I don't seek out establishments that are vegan. Given their reputation, I have been thinking about visiting Bragg's Factory Diner. All I hear is good things, even from non-vegan's like myself.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone! I will definitely start checking some of these places out.
I had really wanted to go to Blue Hounds Veg Fest last weekend but by the time I called to make reservations they were sold out :-(
Anyone have any recs for somewhat-upscale veg restaurants or nicer restaurants with especially well executed/creative vegetarian food? I'm thinking places like two of my favorites in Seattle:
SUTRA - MENU (totally vegan)
today’s thalis. - poppy. eat. drink. herb. spice. (not specifically a veg restaurant, but always has amazing veg thalis)

Not to be a buzz-kill but there is a universe of difference between vegan restaurants and restaurants that have "vegetarian/vegan" offerings.

There are many places in Phoenix that have veg-friendly options...but very few restaurants that are 100% vegan. [off topic]

My husband and I both are vegans and our favorites are the Cutting Board Cafe in Mesa, The Green and Nami (right next door to each other), Pomegranate Cafe, NYPD Pizza has a great Vegan Pizza, Bragg's Factory Diner. If you want some of the best vegan breakfast, lunch, dinner along with desserts drive to Tucson to the Lovin Spoonfuls! Oh I love everything they have there!

My husband cooks the best vegan meals so we don't eat out very often because I crave his food more, I will have to try some of these other suggestions also!

oh yeah, Lovin Spoonfuls is really good and their desserts are great. Have you tried Govinda's in Tucson? Very good/whole food mostly vegan buffet. And for a little treat, at La Cave Bakery in Tucson, a great family owned Mexican bakery that's been around for a long time, they make many varieties of vegan donuts including glazed and jelly filled that are out of this world.

Le Cave's Bakery - Santa Rita Park - Tucson, AZ | Yelp

For desserts right in Phoenix, right near Bragg's, don't forget to try Tree House Bakery, an all vegan bakery with terrific cupcakes, brownies, etc. Top notch quality ingredients and their prices I think are very good.

I'll have to try Bragg's. I here many good things about it also. And yes, that vegan NYPD pizza is excellent. If you're ever up in Goodyear in the Estrella Mountain community/live near it, a restaurant called "A Taste of Italy" has a great vegetarian pizza that we have them make vegan by leaving off the cheese. They put tons of vegetables on it and it's a great pizza with an excellent crust.

Let us know when your husband opens up his restaurant. Actually, I'm very lucky too as my wife is an excellent cook/makes great vegan meals for us. I'm really good at eating the food so we make a great pair.
