Possible move to Glendale, and I want to live in Tempe, because I have family there. My sister states that it is more than an hour commute. Is this accurate?

I'd check it out on mapquest.com--for example if you want to live in Tempe but have a job in Glendale, put in the specific addresses in the Get Directions search and see what comes up.

I lived in Tempe and worked in Glendale years ago and the commute was slightly over 30 minutes, but I wasn't driving at rush hour. The few times I did have to go in at rush hour, it was much longer.

Well it depends where at in Glendale but the two cities are inner suburbs and don't take that long to get from one to the other in non rush hour times. During rush hour it is a pain getting from one to the other and you can count on an hour each way during busy commute times . If you work in Glendale though it really is best to stay in Glendale or Peoria, Surprise. You can always see your family on the weekends and what not unless you just have to be near your family.

Glendale to Tempe is a half hour or so non-rush. As someone with family all over the metro, I will tell you that you just get used to the idea of driving to see them. Driving a good deal comes with the territory in Phoenix. Focus on proximity to work as you will be doing a lot more of that than driving to see relatives.

Ok. You all confirmed what she told me. I was hoping my child could be in school with her cousins.

O well since you put it that way I mean if it's important to you that the kids go to school together and if you don't mind a longer commute to work and sacrificing for your kid then by all means go for it. I think that's great that you want the kids to go to school and grow up together.

It all depends on where you work, but the commute to Glendale is likely less than a lot of commutes are. Many of us, though we are quick to advise others to do so, do not live close to where we work.

Easily an hour on a normal day. If there's an accident (happens a few times a month) it could be more. Maybe 1.5-2 hours.

Definitely accurate. Commuting from anywhere in the east Valley to the west Valley & vice versa can be horrible as far as the traffic, especially during rush hour. One of the problems is the lack of a crosstown freeway that goes to Glendale. You're stuck with the 101, I17, or I10, and then surface streets more than likely. Also, the approximate location in Glendale or Tempe would be helpful because we can recommend what routes to take.

If you will be working in Glendale forget about living in Tempe. Tempe's immensely overrated unless you're a college kid or a professor at ASU. The schools in Tempe are mediocre at best with most being ranked around a 5 at greatschool.org. I would recommend zip codes 85308, 85310, 85083 or 85086. These mentioned zip codes are in Arrowhead and North PHX. These zip codes are upper middle class areas so you will have to pay your "fair share" to live there but the schools and quality of life are sooo much better than Tempe and most of Chandler yet the home prices comparable.
