Actually that is not true: Where Are You From

Only about 14% are from the MidWest. It may seem like more if those are the people you surround yourself with.

That's a cool map! Notice the largest section of the Midwesterners here are from Illinois!

My personal experience and observation was in random people I met via job interviews, at work, etc. Not the circle of friends I chose. I find it to be rare to meet someone that is actually from here! It really seemed that every other person I met was from Chicago!

Or Kansas City.

Or Omaha.

Or Cleveland.

But mostly Chicago.

Motorola is the primary culprit there. During World War II, Motorola more or less invented the walkie-talkie and became a big supplier to the Defense department. After the war, the military was concerned about Motorola's concentration in the Chicago area (vulnerability to attack) and urged them to spread out a bit. The guy in charge of the project picked Phoenix because he had visited there as a child and thought that ASU (then Arizona State College) could provide engineers. Lots of people migrated to Phoenix from Chicago and eventually Motorola was the state's largest employer. Motorola is pretty much gone now but people continue to move here from Illinois because they have friends and relatives here. (I worked for Motorola but am from Michigan by way of Virginia.)

Most people Ive met are from California, with a large contingent of ex-Chicagoans, too.

IL (like CA) is overtaxed, overburdened, crowded, expensive, etc. People are leaving in droves, and I was one of em! Its a shame, too, because there are sooooo many awesome suburbs I would LOVE to live in, but I could never afford them.

Yeah, but CA has good weather and beaches. Have you ever experienced a winter in Chicago or the mid-west.

Native Californian here. But over the years I've spent more time in every corner of Arizona then anywhere else. I wanted to stay in California (my friends and family area there), not for the beaches (I prefer the mountains), but it' was either too expensive and congested in the areas where I wanted to live or the towns too small and isolated. Then I remembered how beautiful Arizona is. It's a perfect fit for me---I'm out away from the city near the open desert, but can drive into Phoenix, Tempe, Chandler, etc. for museums, breweries, the art scene, etc. I love it here.

PS--I've also lived in Southern Oregon, but too cold for me.
