I recently lost my job, I am a widowed 37 year old with a 16 year old. We live in the Valley and he is in an LAUSD High School. We are Jewish, not very religious but I don't want him to be the only Jew in his class so living in an area with some other members of the tribe would be great. I could probably sell my house in Tarzana for around $950k which would be mostly profit as we bought it in the 90s and I only owe about $120k on it.

Are admin jobs hard to come by if you're not bilingual? Now that my employer has shut his doors I am screwed finding another admin job without speaking Spanish here in LA.

Would probably want to purchase around $250k - $300 max...any area recommendations?

The Realtors here (including myself) can't comment on areas with any particular religion and I can't help with admin jobs either unfortunately. Perhaps contact a recruiter in the area. As far as locations I'm partial to Chandler and Ahwatukee due to the schools, location and things for kids to do.

Oh I wasn't asking for job leads, I was just asking if it's commonplace to require bilingual staff as it is in Southern CA.

As for religion, I didn't know that commenting on a forum post was acting in professional capacity where you cannot discuss demographics.

You could probably start by contacting someone at either the Scottsdale JCC or East Valley JCC for help to get you started searching for areas to live and/or potential jobs:

VOSJCC - Valley of the Sun Jewish Community Center
East Valley JCC of Chandler, AZ

Good luck.

I can't speak for the real estate agents here but I assume they're being scrupulous about avoiding any appearance of violating the Fair Housing Act. If so, they are wise.

For your price range you could find something decent as far as housing goes. I have seen where some admin jobs prefer applicants to be bilingual, but I don't think it's as stringent as California. You could probably land work here, but the pay scale is generally lower over here than in California. Depending on where you locate you will most likely not be far from a Jewish community. I live in Chandler and they just built a new synagogue in our neighborhood. If you can, come visit to get a feel for the place.

Sign up with as many recruiters/headhunters you can and have them look for a job for you. Post your resume on CareerBuilder and other job search sites. Don't forget Craig's List!

You can find a decent home in a decent neighborhood for $300,000, if you can stretch to $350,000, you will be much happier with your neighborhood. My experience is that under $300,000 the neighborhoods are not quite as nice and tend to have more renters than home owners living in the homes.

Check Glassdoor for jobs as well as all the other options mentioned.

I have no idea about whether there are any Jewish communities in the greater Phoenix area. Bilingual is ALWAYS going to be a plus but I don't necessarily think it is a requirement. You may just need to look a little harder. You may want to do an internet search for temples in the Phoenix area and check in with a couple to see if they can suggest areas to focus on.

No you don't have to be bilingual for Admin jobs here I would think. Especially if you work in Scottsdale. I feel your pain. I moved from Miami where everything was bilingual. English is almost non extinct in Miami now.. such a shame. I have not found that annoying description much at all in the job postings here. So glad to hear English everywhere I go. To be sure though, call a few recruiters like at Robert Half, Randstad, to get the full scoop.

Can't help you with the Jewish thing. I think Chandler has a lot of Mormons from what I'm told. Probably can google "Jews in Phoenix" to get an answer on what neighborhoods may have that.
