My home HVAC isn't running very well and keeps icing up, my assumption is the freon is low. What is the going rate per pound in the valley for R22.

I have read some pretty wild price quotes for this and I want to be informed before the AC guy comes tomorrow morning.

It's going for $10/pound on craigslist, No doubt most hvac guys will charge whatever you'll pay.

A huge percentage of leaks are right at the valve cores, but I wouldn't let anyone put it in unless they verify where the leak is with a sniffer & repair it. And if they're charging you by the pound, their jug needs to be on a scale, weighing the charge.

Also keep in mind, an r-22 system shouldn't have more than perhaps 6-8 pounds in it total. My 4-ton r-410 system only holds like 3.5 pounds, and that's with a 50-foot lineset.

Good luck!

Just like R-12 days I would not even bother with it just install a new system if it has leaks.

Now that we are on the subject, my ac quit yesterday due to low freon. Had a guy out to find the leak. He sprayed around the copper line where it goes into condenser. No luck. There was oil all over the pipe, so I suggested he remove his pressure gauges and see if it was leaking from the schrader valve. Sure enough, it was bubbling. I thought sweet, replace the schrader valve and cap, recharge, and we are good to go. He wasn't convinced. He suggested going up in the attic and checking the coil for leaks. I thought whatever. He goes up, comes down 10 minutes later, and said coil has a leak. Quotes me 2500 to replace coil and recharge. Am I getting hosed? Anybody have an HVAC guy they trust that I can get a second opinion?
