We have decided to retire to AZ, but we are all over the place in trying to decide exactly where. We liked Sedona, but are worried about it being too small, but it is not off the table.

Prescott seems to rural/country/western.

We are considering Mesa/Tempe/Peoria/Scottsdale. We really liked Scottsdale while we were there.

Housing 600-800K. We are basically home bodies who like to travel. I like living in food-oriented communities, farmer's markets, and an occasional creative meal out. We like lake activities, and will probably want an RV.

I have all kinds of medical conditions which require specialists, and close to a military base would be a bonus.

Any input would be greatly appreciated, we have 5 years so lots of time to visit.

"and close to a military base would be a bonus"....So, if VA Health care is an issue, Phoenix, Tucson and Prescott have VA hospitals. I'm sure you have heard of the reputation of the PHX facility, Prescott is very limited in services offered and ships most complex issues to PHX...that leaves Tucson, which does have a good reputation. There is a military base in Sierra Vista, about 90 miles SE of Tucson. Tucson has a lot to offer. Sierra Vista veterans are served by the Tucson hospital. Casa Grande is the boundary for the Tucson hospital assignment...those veterans north of Casa Grande will be assigned to the PHX facility.

Regards

The RV part caught my eye. Are you aware of the Military RV parks?
U.S. Military Campgrounds and RV Parks - Fort Tuthill Recreation Area

Things like that are why I'm excited to be going back to the CONUS!!

While I really like Scottsdale, if we go to Peoria we can buy a house AND and RV (or a boat)!! Looks like so much fun to travel that way.

With your budget, you can buy in Scottsdale AND get tge RV and/or boat. Your bigger issue will storage of them. They won't be allowed on your proprrty if you buy in an HOA (and it's difficult to find non HOA homes in the valley.)

I'll address the food issue (see my member name). If a good selection of restaurants and food shopping sources is important to you, take these off your list: Sedona, Prescott, Payson. If you are particularly interested in ethnic restaurants and ethnic markets, Tempe, Mesa, Chandler and Gilbert should be high on your list.

Farmer's markets are not a big thing in Phoenix metro. Yeah, they have them, but it's limited. However, you have Sprouts and some large ethnic grocery chains (Lee Lee, Pro's Ranch Market - multiple locatiins) which fill the gap nicely.

I'm assuming that you can rent space for an RV or boat? All the houses I'm seeing are like 5 bedrooms, with a den.... formal dining.... I'm NOT cleaning all that house.

We would like a larger, nice 3 bedroom or so, but those that I find have no space for an RV.
