I think it's your use of the word "swindled" that is a big part of the problem here, and does bring your oft expressed personal views about organized religion into the discussion. Tithing, or giving at some regular level below 10 percent, is not unusual in any church. Those who do give don't consider themselves "swindled".

The whole pay to play scheme when it comes to "salvation" shouldn't sit well with anyone. It was a fair warning based on the recommendation.

I'm sure the OP can investigate that particular church, and any of the others, for him or herself. I don't know anything about it, and am a bit surprised that you do.

Scottsdale Bible is great - they have several locations and they broadcast live on their website and have several subgroups that meet throughout the week - great community based non-denominational -
