It's a Chinaberry, and those berries are poisonous to dogs, cats, and horses, and humans, if a lot are ingested.

I've never eaten one from my tree nor have my dogs to my knowledge. Some birds do eat them. They are supposedly a narcotic.

Yes, they are. It would nice if they were fruitless because they are a very good shade giver tree. On the other hand, deciduous trees such as this that loose their leaves and their berries all at the same time are much easier to keep up with than so-called evergreens that are dropping stuff year round.

This one is still dropping the pits. It's a mess. I'd rather not have trees at all!
