I've recently accepted a great job offer in Deer Valley, however, I've already signed a lease with an apartment complex in Gilbert. How bad is the commute specifically along Loop 101 during rush hour? Is it tolerable for this distance/time (~50 miles)?

Although, Loop 101 is the preferred route, looking at the map, I do have alternative routes with I-17 and AZ-51 covering the more than half of the distance to get back home to Gilbert.

I'm moving soon from Los Angeles, so I figured I'd be able to suck it up for a year since traffic is no where near as bad as Phoenix from what I'm told but wanted to get some opinions.

You are going to be going across the entire metro area. There are not many worse drives you could make. This drive during rush hour will probably take you on average 1 1/2 hrs each way. The slowest part of this drive will be morning rush hour until you get on the i17. It will take longer if there is an accident. You are screwed. Good luck. And I would highly suggest getting a motorcycle, propane, or electric vehicle so you can use the HOV lane.

It's not going to be tolerable for long. The trip home may seem worse than the trip in the morning. I don't know about 90 minutes, as part of it will be a reverse commute each way, but it's going to be long and get old fast.

I'd be reading my lease to figure out how to break it with the least amount of angst and cost.

If it's a complex owned by a large company your best bet may be to transfer the lease to another one of their properties that hopefully is a lot closer. You're looking at 3 hours a day in the car, I agree. You may want to figure the cost of gas and time versus the cost to break the lease ... there are a lot of nice, safe complexes in the Deer Valley area.

This sums it up.

I would look into breaking the lease or transferring it if there are other properties in the Deer Valley area. I would MUCH rather live in Deer Valley than Gilbert anyway!

This is a prime example of why it is said repeatedly on here that where you live should depend on where you work

I don't like doing that drive once a month, no less every day.

Absolutely look into breaking the lease or finding another job. That's not going to work for very long.

^^ What they said. I hope your car is comfortable and gas prices don't go up. I hate making that drive outside rush hours, let alone sitting in my car for over an hour. Maybe invest in audio books?

I work in Scottsdale (Raintree area) and drive out to Gilbert to get my haircut once every 7 weeks. On a good day it takes an hour and you would be well north of Raintree so I'm guessing the 90 minutes is a good estimate. It is hell on me during spring training, I'd change hairstylists but I like her too much! Hopefully you can break your lease or work out another arrangement.
