It looks like the old Circles records and CD store at Central and McKinley is being torn down. Too bad no one could preserve it, it was a great old building. Guess some developer is going to put another CVS store there.

There's been a lot of media coverage of this recently. Long story short: A developer wants to build an apartment tower there that would wrap around part of the Stewart Motor Company building (aka Circles). Preservationists wanted more of the building saved. The developer started partial demolition last Friday even though negotiations were still in progress. There was an uproar and demolition was halted, at least for the time being. The developer blamed "consultants" for bad advice to go ahead with demolition and has hired a new lawyer and PR firm.

That's not surprising.....seems like all most developers want to build these days are apartments or condos. (quite a few buildings in my area have been torn down because of this)

I don't think it's that great of a building, hopefully the development isn't held up by this.

I drove by there Saturday and they had the backhoes going, bulldozers rolling etc. I drove by there tonight and ALL construction equipment is gone. A half demolished building with a fence around it. UNBELIEVABLE.

I used to love going to Circles as a teen. They had all the import albums you couldn't find elsewhere.

The City is claiming bad faith after they began demolition during negotiations. It will probably continue, but now it has to get more complicated because of overzealous developers.

Sadly it was a lousy store in its last days. I went in there on the day that Green Day's 21st Century Breakdown (or was it American Idiot?) came out, wanting to give my business to a local store. They told me that new discs came out on Tuesdays. When I explained that this was a special release they just argued with me. I went to Zia Records and they had a big display. The selection at Circles was actually pretty bad. Lots of rap, lots of classical, not so much of anything else.

What was removed was demolition equipment, not construction equipment. They are/were nowhere ready to start building anything.
