Bummer. Not good news at all. I hope the workers can find something else quickly. Its never easy getting laid off.

I have a good buddy who works at Intel. It seems they are laying off mostly managers and above and some old-timer senior engineers - in other words, the people who likely have the higher salaries that are in less essential roles or might be considered "redundant". The newer, fresh-out-of-college engineers are almost all okay, probably since they are cheaper to keep around and can be easily trained on new systems if needed. No surprise.

It's not always as bad as it seems. Don't worry, Intel will hire most back as contract employees at 25% of their current pay - this is common for Intel.

They are going to continue the layoffs through 2017. My guess is they are hoping to meet their number through these layoffs and attrition over the next year (people retiring, leaving for other opportunities). If there's not enough workforce attrition, they may lay off more within the next year.

At least it's people who are going to have the easiest time getting a new job then, rather than people recently out of school with less than a couple of years under them or even only a few months, who would otherwise have a really hard time landing another job.

Younger people can usually get a new job fairly quickly - It's the 50+ crowd that has the hardest time. They usually make too much, jobs at that level don't open up very often and with that many layoffs, there will be a lot of candidates. No one wants to hire someone that might retire in a few years.

This is why I have a personal goal to have a well funded 401k and paid off mortgage by 45 - you never know what the economy will do. I saw too many middle aged people lose it all in the last decade and I don't want to ever be in a position like that.

The line for applicants at Wal-Mart just got longer.

I guess it's different in AZ because back home in Silicon Valley 90% of the development listings are looking for senior with 10-15 years of experience. Entry level has no chance unless you have a PhD or have a BS from a top 10 ivy league.

I did find it easy to get a job here in AZ as an entry level developer with no experience back in 2014.
