I don't think a bunch of high paid, experienced computer engineers are going to be lining up for Walmart jobs. They'll be looking for similar type jobs in Phoenix and elsewhere. Many will probably leave for other computer-related hardware companies in places like the Bay area, Austin and Seattle.

The managers & senior engineers are the ones who might have the toughest time finding positions at other firms which are equivalent to their current salaries. You know what they say about the higher you climb, the harder you fall. If it were me, I'd be laying off the newbies first ... they're less experienced, usually younger, and can find similar jobs easier & faster than the more established ones.

The Phoenix area can't stand to lose more highly skilled, white collar, business oriented professionals to other metro regions. If more of those types move out, what will be remaining ... rejects who only want to lay in the sun & gawk at the mountains???

Can you tell our inept government that? The morons working at the capital would rather focus on plastic bag bans at the grocery store than economic growth.

With a husband who was one of the ones laid off, I can tell you it was mostly the middle aged white males, as usual. He was a manager with Intel for 20 years and 3 months away from qualifying for early retirement. Just a little bitter, but know this is for the best in the long run. He has been terribly unhappy there for a long time as the work environment sucks. Thankfully we were given a very good package and will be fine. But unless you are female or ethnic, you don't stand a chance at a long term career with Intel anymore.

It'll be elsewhere. Better Half is in upper IT management, and the market in Phoenix is so bad we had to move. Granted, we'd been wanting to move for awhile, and so it was heaven sent in that regard, but it was depressing to see him net nothing in Phoenix because there is nothing there anymore.

Intel's going to leave/move at some point, anyway - Chandler's pockets do have limitations.
