We are looking to move to Phoenix. Specifically Between Baseline and Broadway and 40th st and 35th ave.
we currently live in Maricopa so we have driven through the area but I was just wondering if anyone has any insight on this area. Places to stay away from, great areas, any good charter schools? I noticed the public schools in this area have very low ratings. My son is only 3, but looking for the future. We are looking for a family friendly place. It's my husband, myself, our son, and two small dogs. We will be renting for a year or so before buying.
Thank you for any info you can give!

Well...pre 2005-ish I would have said it is a complete ghetto. The public school ratings should be an indicator. During the building boom they tried to build some nice communities in the area (note how many are gated) but I don't think it worked very well. Why the impetus to buy in that area? South Tempe is just across the I-10?

I live in that area. Some neighborhoods are great...some are bad. I live along Baseline in a nice neighborhood very near Paideia Academy South Phoenix which is a charter school on 16th St and Baseline. It's a new school and they're currently building a second campus. The immediate area around there is nice and I've never felt unsafe.

We don't have to go to that specific area. It's just the closest to my husbands work. Is south Tempe much better? I think of College town when I think of Tempe. Maybe I'm wrong? What area would you suggest that would be about 15 minutes from Southern and 32nd st?

South Tempe is very family friendly and not college town at all. It's a very nice area.

If your choice is between Tempe and the SW Valley you take Tempe every single time. Almost anywhere south of Broadway becomes family friendly or filled with Grad Students (the non partying ones).

That area you described was simply awful until the housing boom, and although there are some newer neighborhoods surrounding the barrio, it's worse than Tempe.

This is an easy decision.

In Tempe, I'd stay West of McClintock and South of Broadway. His commute would run like 15min. If you like older and established I'd look around the Broadmoor neighborhood (or the surrounding ones) if you're looking for a more suburban feel I'd look south of the US60

I agree with Bungle that there is a mixture of nice and not-so-nice neighborhoods in that area. I think Tempe may give you more consistency in that respect.

Thank you for the info everyone! I was just looking at south Tempe. We will definitely look more in that area as well. It is more expensive though. But I guess you get what you pay for
We are looking to stay around $1200 a month or less for a 3 bedroom house. I don't know if we can find that in South Tempe.
