ASU West has a preschool, the Child Development/Family Studies Lab. This school has both full time staff and student interns from the university and is a nationally known and outstanding preschool.

We moved to Phoenix in summer '07 and we have been looking for a good preschool for our 3-year-old. ASU West stood out as a high quality program, based on recommendations and on our observation of classes.

Now it seems that ASU has decided to close the preschool (http://arizonamoms.com/momtomom/education-development/preschool/please-write-protest-asu-%2523039-s-closing-child-development/f - broken link). The bureaucrat in charge says it has something to do with a lack of space on campus. They plan to turn it into an enlarged student recreational facility.

Given Arizona's generally low educational rankings, one would think that an award winning program like the CDC would be a prize worth keeping, not simply an inconvenience that keeps them from installing more ping pong tables and lounge chairs. The bureaucrat claims it costs money to keep the school open, two thirds of the kids are not connected to the university, and they plan to reopen it in "a couple of years" but only for university staff and students, and not as a public facility. I'm basically appalled and dismayed.

Does anyone else have any experience with this situation--is there any hope of reversing this decision, and are there other excellent preschools in the northwest Valley?
