Thanks a lot for the responses! So what I'm basically getting is this. The location is getting better but still has some rough spots. Financially we should be ok as the area is gentrifying and increasing in value slowly, and if we are lucky, Sunnyslope will improve significantly over the next decade. It is a matter of if we are comfortable with the neighborhood. We don't have kids yet, but will very soon. So for a good 15 years the Madison Schools should work for us. And the golden question. Spend more for a smaller house in a central location like this one.... or less for a bigger house in suburbia and risk a massive drive a few years down the road when I look for a new job.

It sounds like you've already answered your own question, but just in case: A shorter commute is almost always worth a modest reduction is square footage.

On top of that you can you what I do which is to find a cop driving around and strike up a conversation with them, tell them what you're thinking and ask their opinion of the area. They are the ones who see the good and bad on a daily basis and know which areas are better than others.
I've received some very good information that way...

A good thing to do is visit the area at different times of the day and just hang out. During the week, weekends, etc. That will give you the best idea about ANY neighborhood.
