Do you know if there are certain neighborhoods near downtown that have many families? I do not want the kids to loners if we chose a downtown location.

Most of the neighborhoods right near downtown are quite poor, especially south. Areas along Roosevelt (especially West of 7th St) are gentrifying rapidly, but its mainly geared towards the 30-somethings. If you can afford it, look into Arcadia (my favorite part of PHX). Its north of downtown, but lots of families back in there.

Have you considered Scottsdale? Areas around Old Town are actually more urban than most areas of PHX, and there are plenty of families living around that area.

Not really feeling like Scottsdale would be a fit for us. And the school issue. With this big of a transition I dont want to completely change their way of learning too. Arcadia could work, but slim pickings for houses. But it is on my radar.

There are tons of houses for sale in Arcadia, if the budget allows. The area around Central and Bethany Home is really nice, seems to have plenty of families and would be good place to focus on for your "north of downtown" option.

I think the "north of downtown" option would work best for you. Yes, there are families. And it's not a long drive to downtown, so it's "near".

May I ask why? Is that because of its reputation as being uppity (which really only applies to North Scottsdale)? Let it go. Go experience the city itself. To pass up the Valley's best nightlife, arts, dining, parks, and safety would be a HUGE mistake on your behalf. The only thing Scottsdale is missing is light rail.

When our kids were younger they absolutely loved the Greenbelt. Lots of parks, play structures and a good bike ride as well.

mostly the school issue. the only montessori is way north near fountain hills. I haven't ruled it out. Maybe I haven't spent enough time there. I am willing to explore it, it's just not a top pick for me.

it would stretch our budget, and i'd rather spend our money on doing things rather than mortgage! but i am always keeping an eye on that area.

I'm pretty sure there is one on Via Linda (over by the stadium) and also one on Cactus, both of which are relatively close.
