My understanding is that it's very location specific. One street might have a scorpion issue, while the next street over did not. We've lived in north Mesa for about five years and our main critter issue is an occasional cockroach, but scorpions, spiders, etc. haven't been an issue. When we were looking at the home we bought, we spoke to a few neighbors and none of them had ever seen a scorpion, so we were pretty sure the house we ended up buying didn't have a scorpion problem.

My experience in urban areas is unless you are living in new construction, the environment was already destroyed a century ago, and nothing except the usual urban wildlife can make a living there. New construction, though, means you are moving in on areas that were recently wildlife homes and habitat; so expect to see them for a while.

Ocotillo area of Chandler has been here over 20 years...and while construction will stir them up they are just a constant in this area.

Twenty years is not long enough; I'm referring to neighborhoods that were developed in the 1920's. Lawns, streets, sidewalks. If you want to avoid snakes and arachnids, take a look at midtown neighborhoods that are a century old.

Way over the top and unnecessary.

Avoiding snakes is entirely possible there, yes. Avoiding arachnids? Not a chance in h-e-double hockey sticks.
