I can only speak about these in terms already being established when I purchased the home, however, I have 3 black maple trees at a rental property. They don't get a lot of water, and they grow faster than weeds do. They also can get quite large if you don't trim the branches in the winter.

Give them a shot. They aren't native, but they might be right around what you want.

Maples? you must be mistaken. Black locust maybe? Maples won't grow here.

I'm not. You can't mistake maple leaves. The whole neighborhood has them scattered about. They grow beautifully and the leaves change color.

That sound like a Palo verde....I have one and plan to add a second on the side of my house...I love the yellow flowers that drop and cover the ground.
