Very interesting report, especially the list of Most Scarce Skills. I currently reside in the D.C. metro area and am planning my move to Phoenix 1.5 years from now. As an AZ resident, how do you feel about the report?

I think it's about what I would expect. It's a large city, sure, but it's very blue collar by nature with a strong reliance on real estate and services.

As a white collar professional, I always feel more in tune with the populace in DC, but that does not mean I don't like Phoenix.

Some of the most scarce skills list is a joke. Like life sciences and risk management. The others seem to line up though. I believe we just had a pharmaceutical employer move to Scottsdale this year near McDonald and the 101? We aren't really a big pharm town. Though I did see a lot of jobs for Behavioral Health Technicians, a surprising amount, but it's not like that's a well paying job either. It's not only stressful (addicts and the mentally ill are definitely emotionally draining) but low-paying. I used to be in training for that position (requires a professional cert) until I woke up and realized it's not worth it to me. Mental health treatment is definitely in growth here in the Southwest.

The abundant skills on the other hand, do line up. Too much focus on real estate like JG said, especially flipping and construction. Arizona has a huge amount of pilot training programs, due to our weather which is pleasant for new pilots, along with big Air Force bases which makes sense for aviation. AZ has always been known for mining since its inception. Customer service is kind of an obvious one. I'm not entirely sure what IC design and Embedded System is, sounds like IT stuff, which is intriguing because I thought IT was something that was growing here and would fall more on the scarce list.

The scarcity in Accounting skills doesn't surprise me at all.
