I have a little patch of yard and certainly don't need some fancy landscaper, nor even something regular. Just an inexpensive guy, English-speaking, in the east valley for an occasional trim. The great guys I've had have either become ill or moved away.

Rather than asking for a specific name, I was thinking about sources. For instance, I tried calling some garden clubs and horticultural classes. No luck. Any better ideas?

Try this. You sign up by your location (neighborhood) and there will be plenty of recommendations, community news, classifieds, etc.

Agreed. Nextdoor is a great resource for recommendations for services of all types.

Thank you for the range of replies.

My neighbors are, obviously, the ones I asked first. No good. Either they have gardeners who are too expensive, only want to do regular weekly service, or don't speak English.

I'm not on Facebook, so that's no go.

When I first heard about Next Door, it sounded interesting, but as soon as I learned that it's based on using your real-life identity, that killed it for me right there. I'm "real" in life, but not online. Also, in the last year, I've started to hear bad things about it - mean, bitchy stuff going on.

Craigslist is a frequent resource for me, although usually not too successfully. I did indeed contact a few people. Three never bothered to call me back (this happens so often with Craigslist that I'm completely puzzled), and one guy expected me to book him without my first meeting him, without him first giving me a price.

What's Thumbtack? I'm not familiar with that.

It's a website. You put in what you want and companies send you quotes. It's good for these basic sort of jobs.
