I will be moving to Phoenix in the next few months for a job a the Phoenix airport. What areas are ideal for commuting there, but still close to higher-end shopping, restaurants, etc.? Budget is around $1500 for a 1 or 2 bedroom apartment (just me and a couple of cats).

Old Town Scottsdale area would be ideal.

And depending on your hours to some extent, would not be a bad commute. Good suggestion. You could also go into the Biltmore/Camelback East area in Phoenix as the other option.

South Phoenix/West Chandler would also work. I-10/Chandler Blvd, Ray Rd/I-10, 48th St from CHandler Blvd to Baseline, etc. Encompasses South PHX/S Mountain, Ahwatukee, W Chandler, S Tempe. LOTS of very nice apartments in the area, close to restaurants and basic services (grocery stores, gas, usual chains like Kohls, Target etc) and not that far on weekends from more upscale in Scottsdale. Commute to airport outside of rush hour is about 15 minutes. I'm not sure what it would be during rush hour. The area is definitely within your budget, possibly less.

I work at the airport. If you're going to be commuting during rush hour, stay away from anything along I-10 W/B. Everyone I know who lives in Avondale, Goodyear, Buckeye, etc. tends to absolutely hate their commute.

I echo what others have said here. Stay in the Central Phoenix, Tempe, Chandler, South Scottsdale area.

So, I wound up going with Old Town Scottsdale! I signed the lease today and move later in the month. It's a 7-month lease, just in case the area winds up being way too noisy, since the apartment complex is close to several nightclubs. If it does, I'll move over to my second choice area (Biltmore).

Welcome to Phoenix, and good luck! If you've got more questions as you get settled in, feel free to ask!
