Does Phoenix have those nasty red ants that we have in Florida? When I walk on our trails in Tampa, we see mounds of dirt pushed up by these nasty critters. They are not pleasant if they bite you!

They have southern red ant that is not as aggressive as the fire ant and the sting isn’t as bad. Still not pleasant but nothing compared to fire ants.

I’ve never seen red ants here in 14 years, I do have a red headed aunt though.

Yep. Arizona has red ants and black ants. Never had much use for them. I once poured gasoline down a red ant hole when I was younger with not much else to do. Another time I got into a close-quarter scuffle with a horned toad.

I have only seen red ants on the outskirts of the valley, they tend to be more in the mountains. However, I go to Scottsdale Community College, I have seen a few of them around there, weirdly enough. But, the college is also on the Reservation so maybe that's why.

No but we have venomous centipedes and of course scorpions. Florida has scorpions too right? I don't think they are as bad as ours though

Yes, Arizona does have fire ants. They came here from the SE states some time ago and get more and more common each year. There are also other types of ants that are as bad or worse. Surely you have seen westerns where someone is tied down to an anthill in the desert.

Yep, seen 'em and had fun dealing with 'em. It's amazing what a weed torch on high will do to a fire ant hill and said ants inside! Turns sand to glass and fries everything down below.

Not much to worry about.

I'd be more worried about those blood sucking, brain eating scorpions we have here though.
