I believe it is 1.4% of how much your home is worth

Too high in most circumstances. It is kind of hard to get at because it is based on assessed value not actual value and it depends greatly on how many school bonds and such are outstanding in your area. I think a better rule of thumb is 1/2 to 3/4% of what you pay for it. Mine is about 2/3 % based on the inflated value of 2006.

Texas will be much higher for property tax. There is no state income tax so that is one place they make up for it. I pay about 4000 a year on a 150K house in El Paso. Its nuts.

For a really rough estimate, you can say that the tax rate in Maricopa County is less than 1% of the value of your house. Of course, this is the appraised value, as appraised by the County Assessor's office -- not your own appraisal.

You also have to take into account what you pay in state income taxes -- in order to see if it is an overall benefit to live in Tx (high property tax, no state income tax). For example, a retired person on social security would do much better in AZ (low property tax, state income tax).
