I just bought my first police scanner, and didnt realize all the frequencies have to be manualy entered. Were they like that in the 70's 80's?
I didnt think they were. Anyway I live In Surprise and if any readers would like to share some advice and cool frequencies with me I would be grateful...

I have one from the 80's. My grandmother listened to it all the time (she worked for Phx PD). I remember she had to program it herself. I haven't touched it since she gave it to me.

Find a Radio Shack and grab the frequency book from them.

I don't think they sell them anymore. I tried to get a new one about a year ago and after looking all over the store I finally asked and was told thet the guy that originally wrote the scanner books that they sold had retired and wouldn't pass on the rights to it. However ther are some other books available (even some older Radio Shack ones if you do a internet search.

Way too complicated to get into depth on this forum, but most all of the local PD and Fire dept here now uses digital trunked radio equipment. the old scanners will not work. Try searching for Uniden trunking scanners for the trunking types.Good luck.

You'll find many agencies are now in the 800MHz range. Some use encryption as well. Here's a couple links with old info and frequencies. Less and less traffic is broadcast via voice as MDCs have become more and more prevalent.

well thanks everyone for the wealth of information..should have posted for your advise BEFORE I bought this thing. I thought I was cutting a fat hog in the butt, but I wasted my dough. This Uniden BC 248 doesnt do squat. I listened for 3 hours and only heard 2 el mirage cops on their handhelds, and a bunch of morris code..guess Ill buy a trunking scanner, after punishing myself for jumping the gun..thanks again folks..still open for suggestions and advise on hardware.

The morse code is the station identifier...Since the state is always the last to get modern equipment, here's some AZ DPS freqs to try; I don't know if they've entered the 21st century in the last couple years.
