I just moved into an apartment in Phoenix & the A/C stopped working the next day. Maintenance was over twice and it seemed like it was working ok. We had it down to 70 and it was too cold, so I put it up to 75 & it somehow managed to end up at 82 this afternoon. Does that mean it’s a bad unit? Can the higher temps be a factor? I’ve only had problems with an A/C unit once in ten years before now and the maintenance guys came in to fix it and it was fine. So I don’t know much about them. I’m already a little nervous about the electric bill (APS) and now I’m real nervous because this unit is hard to control.

Could be low on refrigerant but this wouldn't explain why it initially stopped working.

What did the AC vendor say was wrong with the unit?

Contact property management or the landlord right away. My guess is something is still wrong with the unit.

They changed the thermostat. I chose the saver plan with APS with peak hours from 3-8. Planned on turning it down, well warmer during those hours, but that’s not going to work with this unit at this point. I just want to make sure it’s not typical with these outside temps or something before I have a fit about it.

O.k. so the AC vendor changed the thermostat. You then set it for 70 which was too cold. You moved it up to 75 but the house is now 82.

Perhaps you aren't setting the thermostat timer correct.

Or is this a thermostat without a timer?

In which case there might still be a problem with the thermostat or another issue.

No timer.

Is any cold air coming from the AC?

Or is there air but it isn't too cold.

I believe it was 119 degrees in Phoenix today. If so, 82 is about as cool as any unit will get the temperature inside.

It was 117 in Mesa today. The AC in my mothers home has no problem staying at 77.

However, her AC is fairly new.

I will be in Mesa in a couple of weeks. I usually come to AZ this time of year. Once I turned off the AC in the morning to find out how long it takes for the house to get unbearably hot. By 2 pm the temp. reached 88 or so at which point I turned the AC back on.

I have a couple of fans in case of an emergency. If they aren't placed too far from a table or a bed they will work in a pinch.
