I don't know of any repellant. We live in Gilbert, and I'll estimate we've caught at least a dozen in the past month. Granted, we do live next to some irrigated farms and get irrigation water ourselves for the yard, so we likely see more than in a typical suburban neighborhood.

They are nocturnal, so generally you won't need to worry during the day. Just don't provide any hiding places for them. I left a doggie swim vest on the patio one night, and the next morning there was a toad under it. Aaaarg!

Edit: I should add they seem to be attracted to light at night, as they know there will be tasty flying insects nearby. You might be able to use that tidbit to some advantage.

My guess is that those who are faint of heart in such matters continue to speak to each other. A psychiatrist could clean up in Arizona from arachnophobia alone. Can't wait for the rattlesnake thread.

Posters which indicate they've never seen a s______ in 25 or 50 years or in their lifetimes, need to know that while they don't see them... THEY DO SEE YOU!

There. I'm sure that'll help.

I'm afraid to say anything about them out of superstitious fear that they will then show up........

Not unless someone introduces them with some new construction or landscaping. If you haven't seen any in years you don't have them. If you have them, you'll see one, two or three in a year inside, or outside with a black light.

OP:
If you get sprayed they'll be messed up but usually not dead if they don't get hit directly. Therefore, they can stagger around during the day, and might not be in their usual places at night. So, yes, your dogs can get involved and they still sting in this condition. My cat went out during the day, just in the yard for about an hour. Came in and their face started to swell. I found the scorpion on the patio. The cat ended up ok, but that was after an eight hundred dollar vet visit, drainage, and some antibiotics. I had a rabbit that was killed by one. If you get stung you'll be out of work for a day or two depending on how bad they got you. If your kids get stung they'll be sleeping with you for a while says my sister who has kids and scorpions.

I'm in Gilbert and hoping to move into the city to get away from them. It's not the sting that's the worse part, it's all the time maintaining your yard and home to prevent your pets and family from getting stung. Pain in the butt. Always checking bedding, towels, shoes, spraying a ton, backlighting, etc. After all that you still have a few that manage to find a way. lol They'll live on forever and ever!

I admire those who don't care at all about them. I guess it all depends on who you are. If you're on here asking you will probably mind them. Gilbert is a great city, and there are places here without them but very few.

And into bathroom vents, and on walls and ceilings. Ew. Not as good at the ceilings tho, which is why they often fall into your little bed and you wake up screaming!! They're like little lobster terrorists. Durable as all get out.

Seems some people get kind of excited on this topic. That's... interesting.

I can only speak for myself here. I don't have a "phobia" about scorpions. I've run into them in my mom's house a few times during the summer. I just trap 'em in a glass and toss 'em out. I don't particularly want to get stung by one, but if I do, c'est la vie. My real concern is the dogs... I don't want either to have to suffer a sting if we can avoid it, and the small one (12 lb.) could potentially face some health problems.

If you never see scorpions, or don't care about them, or keep them as pets, bully for you. That "advice" isn't particularly helpful. Thanks to those who have some constructive ideas on the topic of mitigating stingy/bitey critters

So many threads about scorpions! wanted to show off the latest kill from this morning - urgh - never saw one with guts before? Or I think it's guts?? don't think it was a pregnant scorpion as that's usually white sacks on top - but what the heck?! walking bare foot in the garage to scoop out cat litter and there it was - think it was on its back - thank you kitties! and then smacking it with a shoe that was the result - sure my neighbors didn't appreciate the blood curdling screams!!!
