We went out to AZ this weekend because we are considering a move from CA. We looked at all the major suburbs in Phoenix, but the biggest issue we found is how much driving everything entails. Everything is so sprawled out. Trying to be open minded- wondering how current residents feel about driving so far to everything. The city that appealed the most was North Peoria area. Any insight or advice?

"Driving so far to everything". I guess it depends on what your "everything" is... it's different for everyone. Generally, we are used to doing a fair amount of driving. You can plan to be close to work and most shopping/medical needs, but most of us still drive distances at times to meet with friends, attend special events, etc. At least gas prices are reasonable. Many of us use public transit when we can.

Is California really that different?

OP - I live in Chandler. I have family and some friends in Scottsdale, including north Scottsdale. It's not a big deal to drive 20 minutes, 25 minutes at night or on the weekend. I live very close to work and have all my necessary amenities within a 6 mile radius.

I'm OK to drive downtown for sporting events or to Glendale for concerts as I don't do it every day.

I can get to everything I want and need from my neighborhood in 5 minutes, downtown in 20.

If you are from California our sprawl isnt any different than yours. Unless you live in Santa Monica or San Francisco what was different about Az compared to Cali?

Like most cities, if you are willing to pay a premium you can live in the central city and be closer to "everything"

"Driving so far to everything" is a choice, one that is heavily influenced by where you choose to live. You've said you're leaning towards north Peoria. There are some great hiking trails and the recreational amenities of Lake Pleasant there, but it's also an area that is remote from the rest of the metropolitan area and not served at all by public transit. If you want to drive less, find a neighborhood in a more central location. If you want to live in an outer suburb, then it will be necessary to understand the consequences of that decision, including long drives to many destinations.

I'm in NW Mesa, near the northern intersection of the 101 & 202 and I'm no more than 30-35 minutes from most anywhere in the metro (excluding rush hour of course). It's no worse than driving than Dallas or Tampa, and much easier traffic than Atlanta and Houston.

You must realize the irony in complaining about the sprawl and wanting to move to the far exurbs. Live in the central core and the sprawl will be irrelevant, as you’ll never need to drive way out there.

Yes. Try to live as close as possible to your place of employment. You will notice that that is the #1 question asked of posters here. So in a nutshell, determine where you will be commuting to every day, and live ideally less than 5 miles from that location. Sprawl issue solved or at least severely minimized.

I live in central Phoenix, so I only drive to the suburbs if I want to. I recommend living close to work and services. Don't add to the air pollution.
