As a (then) member of the Willo Board, I didn't think we had any business telling people what they can and can't do with their property. One person's treasure is another person's eyesore. Unfortunately I was in the minority.

The city is currently working on "best practices" for murals.

What happens when they become political? Sexual? etc...

It's always going to come down to somebody else's sense of art.

The Wallace and Ladmo mural off Roosevelt and 1st avenue. Now that's art!

I also tend to go along with the belief that property owners should decide what to do with their property, but I also understand the need to keep a certain amount of aesthetic value to a neighborhood as well. If the Willo Board is anything like the HOAs, their purpose is to retain the charm of the area. Art is very subjective. Some will see the above mural as beautifully creative, while others may see it as detracting from the area & contributing to blight. But like with most anything else, what the majority favors should be the rule.
