Yes, I know 5GE isn't real 5G but LTE Advanced (it will be a while until I get a real 5G phone), but just for curiosity, what areas of the Valley are currently covered by 5GE? It appears 5GE went live today here in Queen Creek, South Gilbert, South Chandler, and Sun Lakes. I know most of Chandler (except South Chandler) and Tempe had it for a while. It still doesn't appear to be available in most of Gilbert; haven't tried it in Mesa today.

I got my current phones a few months ago and immediately noticed 5GE signals both at home in Chandler (Ocotillo) and at work in Tempe, a few miles S/SE of ASU. Just to clarify, I am on AT&T.

What kind of speed test have you gotten with the 5G? You can download free app test the download speed.

Just as an update, from what I learned, whether or not AT&T displays the 5GE symbol is based on the Tracking Area Code (TAC). If there are certain percentage of towers within the TAC that have been upgraded that meet AT&T's performance requirements, the 5GE symbol gets turned on. When the symbol flip-flops, you are moving between two different TACs.

I have actually used a tower tracking app, and it appears my TAC covers Queen Creek, South Gilbert, and parts of East Gilbert and Southeast Mesa. I think the reason AT&T performed the upgrades in my TAC is because there were a few dead spots in a few places that AT&T decided to perform the 5GE upgrades to most of the towers within the TAC at the same time. For example, I know there was a dead spot around Power and Warner that has since been fixed.

I know most of Gilbert and Mesa still don't display the 5GE symbol. I think the dead spot issues in my TAC is what led AT&T to perform the upgrades here before upgrading the rest of Gilbert or Mesa.

5GE isn't really 5G, it is AT&T's term for LTE-Advanced and LTE-Advanced Pro on towers with upgraded backhaul, three-way carrier aggregation, 4x4 MIMO, and 256 QAM. Since it appears AT&T performed these upgrades on most of the towers within my TAC, the 5GE symbol was turned on.

right, but if your phone isn't a 5G enabled phone, you will NOT get real 5G signal/speeds, even once they actual enable "real" 5G

Looks like AT&T has just lit up the 5GE icon in the TAC that serves most of Gilbert as of this week. West Mesa though still shows 4G LTE; not sure about East Mesa.
