I have never seen any home bulit in the Phoenix area without a heating system. In fact the International Residential Code would probably not allow it. Due to the location in IECC Climate Zone 2 (not Zone 1), there are some days where there is some heating demand. People in other Zone 2 cities such as Houston don't have this mentality that heating is unnecessary.

In Florida over 90% of homes use heat pumps and I think they are mandated there by the state's residential codes, which is understandable. Here gas furnaces are still commonly installed and actually made somewhat of a comeback since the 2010s in new construction homes. Our last two homes built in 2011 and 2014 (built by two different builders) had gas furnaces.

Holy smokes, what's your electric bill in the summer?!!
I keep my heater at 67 during the day, 66 at night.
Summertime it's at 78 degrees. My SRP bill is $95 per month all year round for 2100 SQFT single level.

Anecdotally, I don't have a single neighbor here (in Sun City West) that has a furnace. We all have heat pumps.
