Over the past several months Gilbert teenagers have been beaten, even murdered, for no apparent reason. Parents and area teens know what is going on. A gang of affluent teenagers who go by the name Gilbert Goons is behind the violence they say. Police continue to deny any link raising suspicions that the Goons are being protected because of the wealth and influence of their parents. Gilbert is an odd city in that members of a particular religious group hold most of the positions of influence and power. Business, government, police are all related.

This is not Gilbert's first time with violent rich kids terrorizing the citizens, either. Long time residents will recall the Devil Dogs who committed similar acts in the late 90s.

People considering moving the area are well advised to avoid Gilbert unless and until the police there get control of this situation.

Avoid Gilbert? One of the safest places in the nation? Where would one go?

It doesn't look very safe right now.

Interesting article. Lot of work to cover a relatively small story (relative to over 400 homicides a year in AZ) but interesting nonetheless to see failings on so many different fronts, from family, to government, to the police.

I assume that the religious group you allude to is the LDS?

As a cop acquittance of mine used to say trash comes in all sizes, shapes and colors.

Whatever happened to telling things as they are. If it offends those with delicate sensibilities, so what. Nothing will ever get done if we just cover things up, like poo in a litter box. The smell is less, but the poo is still there.

Rich neighborhoods everywhere have groups of kids that have behavioral issues and they always go away in a couple years. I live in Chandler a neighboring suburb and I have a boy in High School that plays football and baseball so I know tons of kids in the area and this has never come up as an issue.

I have my reasons for not wanting to live in Gilbert, but a high crime rate is not among them. These articles show that it's an illusion to think that the suburbs are always safe, but they don't demonstrate a higher overall crime rate in Gilbert than in other communities. These crimes are subject to media coverage because they seem out of character for places like Gilbert and Queen Creek. When they happen in places like Maryvale, they're seen as par for the course and therefore not as newsworthy. No mattter what location is involved, reporting about gang activity almost always makes places sound more dangerous than they really are.

You can go by what you read on social media, or you can read this article.

Because they're pretending to be tough gangsters, not grizzly bears.

If they were pretending to be grizzly bears and you wanted to expose them to the real thing then the middle of Alaska would be perfect.

But since they're Wanksters (Wannabe Gangsters) you send them to the places known for having very tough real gangs.

Thanks for the unreasonable post, I guess, in order to raise awareness. That being said, you went too far.
