Check craigslist.com. When I was looking for apartments for my mom, I saw tons of listings that said felons, bad credit, etc are ok.

although not a felon, I have first hand experience via family and friends with your needs. I strongly recommend a honest, personal approach to apt. managers, present yourself, not the details of your crime, just the general conviction(ie;drugs, theft whatever), you're on a good path now, seeking opportunities to reestablish yourself into society....many people believe in giving second chances.
Do not cop attitude, but you know that already. Be prepared for refusals. Thank the person politely and leave, reminding yourself that they don't pass final judgement on you.
In my very limited circle, I've at least 5 exfelons who have achieved peace and happiness in life. God bless you.
oh, and btw....get into a good church, a goodsized one where people will not single you out or ostracize you as "that person". Eventually you will be surprised at the exfelons around you during worship. Very surprised.

Definitely CL is a good place to try. Perhaps renting some rooms in a house or a small house from a private party?
