Have you ever seen HBO's "The Wire?" Phoenix PD may be "juking the stats."

I still would not leave your car at Metrocenter mall unless you are tired of owning it.
Everyone comes up with doubts on reports of lower crime, the difference here however, is that EVERY agency, from local to federal is reporting lower theft AND lower criminal court filings. They ARE actually lower and NOT higher, especially since most of those caught are illegal and are deported or turned over to ICE.

Criminal court filings in Maricopa County are simply not lower than they were last year. The reports discussed in the local news this week were largely based on Phoenix PD numbers. Car theft in Glendale is actually up year over year, although it did drop in other cities included in the report. Violent crime rose in Mesa and Peoria, and dropped by a small amount in Phoenix proper (11,195 to 11,159). The FBI serves as a clearinghouse for the data, but the local departments still provide the numbers and standards vary.

It seems logical that fewer illegal immigrants would mean substantially lower crime, but the court dockets do not show meaningful differences. Maybe next year.

When a police department has been given a black eye over an issue (e.g. the city with highest car theft rate in the USA), be wary of remarkable new statistics and accompanying press conferences with the mayor. And frankly violent crime concerns me more.

My rates have gone down significantly over the past year or so. I even got rebate checks from the insurance company.

A rebate check from an insurance company because of this? I have not yet seen or heard that one...wow!

I hate that my insurance payment is more than my car payment.

FCIH?

The cars/parts are shipped to nearby Mexico where some people can make decent money, they arent simply stolen and then taken for joy rides anymore...

A percentage of cars stolen here are skipped over the border to be sold whole to folks in Mexico and/or shipped to just about every other emerging country - particularly solid SUVs and work trucks.

But a good many go to domestic chop shops where they are parted out. The parts are sold here, to underhanded dealers and repair shops. If anyone has had the pleasure of having to buy a matching bumper, tail light, etc. you know the high prices of modern parts. I've heard that a Honda Accord, for example, is worth twice the price in parts than whole.

And that's why the Accord, Camry and the other "most stolen" cars pretty much mirror the top sellers here in the U.S. - they get wrecked the most and the corresponding parts are thus the most desired in this market, which pressures the black market. If the body shop can bill your insurance company $700 for a new grill but get that "new" grill for $300, that's a tidy profit.

It's why the most stolen cars aren't Ferraris, Porsches, Lamborghinis, but Sentras, Saturns and Civics. The former do get stolen, but by the joy riding idiots or someone with serious cajones willing to swipe a high profile car for a high paying client overseas (where they don't check VIN numbers!).

But most of the "professional" thieves are nabbing $10K cars which result in $20k worth of parts, and the car pretty much scatters into a thousand little pieces that are very tough to trace.
