We're looking to buy a new/used suv and I remember something about not paying sales tax or something if you buy on the reservation. Is that true? Anyone have a name for the car dealerships out there? I tried google but didn't come up with anything. Thanks!

You didn't come up with anything because there isn't anything. If that were the case, there would be one auto mall after another as soon as you crossed the rez boundaries - thick as casinos. Even if you buy a car in a state like Oregon which doesn't have sales tax, you will be taxed when you go to register it here.

I agree with, Ponderosa . . .

However, unless the laws have changed in the last few years, I believe a Used Vehicle via a Private Sale is not subject to sales tax.

Ohhh! I swear when we were driving on the 10 about a year ago I saw a dealership saying that you didn't have to pay sales tax on cars or something. It was (i think?) around Casa Grande or a little South of there.

Possibly a promotion similar to Furniture Stores where they pay the Sales Tax with the deal?

I believe that would only apply to Rez residents. And probably only to folks who live on that particular reservation; i.e. Navajos on their Rez, etc.

If such a loophole applied to anybody with at least 1/4 American Indian blood----------most Hispanics would qualify as well along with many Anglos and Blacks for sales tax exemptions.

There are places that advertise "no city sales tax" because they are not located in a city. That amounts to 2 percent or so, depending on the city, that you would avoid paying. You would still pay state and county sales tax.

For example, if you bought a car or a bottle of detergent in Sun City (unincorporated Maricopa County), you would pay around 6% sales tax. If you bought those same items a few miles away in Surprise, you would pay 8.5% sales tax.

Of course, a used car from a private party incurs no sales tax at all.
