I agree completely with the OP. Phoenix is full of Midwesterners and the values are similar. Las Vegas is California East. When I lived in CA, everyone was moving to Las Vegas. I thought they were all idiots but kept my mouth shut because Phoenix is a much better choice--why bother to inform them of the obvious? Las Vegas hums at a fast rate like California does. It's easier to get there from the coast. Phoenix on the other hand has a barely noticeable connection to California. Phoenix is viewed as "lesser" by Californians and the extra 3 hours of driving from the Coast keeps us separate in more ways than one (thankfully). Yes, Phoenix ties to the Midwest, Las Vegas ties to California.

Yeah I'd like a definition too. That and redneck seem to be a common description of inland empire residents from many Californians. Are they talking about illiterate, poor, sloppilly dressed, prone to drug use and crime white people or is it a way to distinguish themselves from those who don't fall for the plastic surgey, boob job, botox, BMW driving lifestyle herd mentality so common in SoCal?

You can't really judge Las Vegas because most of the people on the strip are tourists from all over the country including Phoenix and Las Vegas. Real Las Vegas feels more like Phoenix and I can 't really tell the difference between the two. If I had to be picky, I would say "true" Las Vegas feels slightly more conservative because Phoenix is just more of a developed and real city. If people are referring to hicks, uh I don't see how people could walk in areas outside of the strip in Las Vegas and make fun of another city for being hick-like. Vegas is just a tourist stop and most people who move there eventually leave due to its tourist-like dynamic. Phoenix is taken more seriously because it is a real city as opposed to some Orlando-west wannabe like Las Vegas. Las Vegas is certainly not LA by any stretch of the imagination unless you are talking about Pure nightclub on the Las Vegas Strip. I'm originally from LA too.

If you want to compare Phoenix with SoCal, Phoenix is a lot like Orange County-- except with no beach. "LA" itself-- not really the best comparison, IMO.

It always comes down to socioeconomic reasons. A person who is of lower socioeconomic status will more challenged financially to pursue the highest education. And without education, they often don't receive exposure and thus are ignorant about other customs, cultures, ideas etc and may come accross as being ignorant. And like with all stereotypes, these individuals receive their own stereotypical label.

Can you please explain how Phoenix is a much better choice?

Las Vegas is not a real city? What do you mean by that?

No core.........very transient. Not that we have such a core here but compared to Vegas we do. I spent a year there thinking it would be a good move and then ran back to Phoenix. I still like to visit and have fun but after a couple of days it's time to go.

Here is a quick example, David Stern, the NBA commisioner won't even entertain putting an NBA franchise in Las Vegas because of the fear of corruption due to the proximity of the casinos. They only allowed the All-Star game to be played there after much deliberation. Las Vegas will never get professional teams as a result of the casinos. It's unfortunate because Las Vegas would easily support a professional team but the league commissioners have not considered Las Vegas for expansions because of the gambling. I understand that sports isn't everything and there are other examples but I will be able to will season tickets to my family in Phoenix and carry on the tradition of going to Suns and Diamondback games which Las Vegas will never have. The casinos and tourist aspect have such an impact on that city that it really hasn't been able to develop outside of that. Las Vegas is known to have the most people move there per year but it's also recognized as the city to have the most people leave per year. It's a fun city but after a while people get tired of the tourist aspect.
