Maybe it's still liberal, but it's in Spanish so you can't understand it.

I think the market for Liberal view points is saturated by the mainstream media and liberal talk radio is redundant. Is there program/host that you are specifically looking for? Maybe the conservative talk radio programs are so strong because they buck the state run media that has emerged with pretty much a uniform message.

Radio...this isn't 1920...we get our news and information and communicate via the internet and television. Twitter and all those fancy things on the "internets" that the conservatives are just learning about! LOL, I am being facetious...sort of!

Default 1480 KPHX Phoenix

1480 KPHX now again has the contracts for the Liberal talk hosts in the Dial Global (Stephanie Miller, Ed Schultz, Bill Press, Thom Hartmann), Premeire (Randi Rhodes) networks. The station operates w/ 5,000 watts day; 500 watts night. Speaking as someone in the communcations industry, there are several reasons why liberal talk does not get as high ratings as conservative talk:

1. Conservative talk hosts already have an advantage, since they have a built in audience of older males 35+ who began listening with Rush Limbaugh in the early 1990's
Therefore most talk radio listeners are conservative, according to market research.
They are less likely to listen to liberal hosts especially if the liberal hosts are too far to the left.

2. The major media companies (Clear Channel, Citadel, Cumulus) own the majority of high wattage Class A and Class B (many 50kW) talk stations, and the conservatives got there first -- before the liberals came along in 2003 w/ Air America and Ed Schultz (with the exception of Alan Colmes who is the longest running liberal talk host).
Liberal hosts are often on Class B, C, and even D (Chicago) stations that do not cover the entire Arbitron survey area with a good signal, resulting in diminished ratings and revenue.

3. Air America, Dial Global, and other syndicators of liberal talk have chosen to go far left, limiting their potential listenership among the predominately conservative demographic.

4. Stations with both liberals and conservatives consistently outperform all liberal stations, such as KOA-AM (850) Denver, and KIRO-AM (710) Seattle, and KGO-AM (810) San Francisco. All three stations are #1 in their respective markets for all listeners 12+ 6A-MID M-Sun (Arbitron).

5. The most successful left leaning talk hosts are local rather than national, and are closer to the center than the aforementioned syndicated ones. Dave Ross in Seattle; Ronn Owens in San Francisco, as examples, capture huge ratings in their respective markets, even among conservative listeners.

There are MANY more reasons. 1190 has a better signal for the Metro than 1480 especially at night and in the east valley. When the station moved from 1480 to 1190, the quarterly ratings doubled for Fall 2008 from 0.8 to 1.6 for Arbitron 12+ 6A-MID, showing that the signal is at least one reason for poor performance of liberal talk in conservative Phoenix.

The signal is the key to success for KING-AM (1090) Seattle, one of the rare liberal stations on 50,000 watts + Dave Ross and the late Mike Webb. And, in Portland, liberal KPOJ-AM (620) is on 25,000 watts day; 10,000 watts night. The two most highest rated all-liberal stations are Santa Fe, NM; and Portland, OR; in part due to the local political affiliation of the local population. Phoenix will always be a difficult market to sell liberal talk, and was not a good market to start the new now bankrupt NOVA-M network. They would have done much better in Albuquerque, as AM 1350 over there is one of the highest rated liberal stations in the US, and Albuquerque is MUCH more liberal than Phoenix.

the radio engineer has spoken <nerd>

Depends what type of liberal host you're listening to. Fiscal Conservative / Social Liberals such as Mike Rosen in Denver don't want to raise taxes, and Mike Rosen is the #1 Talk Host in Denver.

On the other hand, it seems that Conservative Democrats and Conseravative Republicans alike (no pun intended) in the State of Arizona have been raising taxes, impact fees, and utility bills through the roof for years, with no opposition from the public. I've never seen anything like it, and smart young people flee the state if they want to start a business.

Tom Lane, do you always talk through your butt? LOL, one thing at a time here. First off, Albuquerque is NOT more liberal than Phoenix. Where are you from California? Because NM and ALB vote democratic DOES NOT make it a liberal state. Most of the people in NM are hispanic, catholic hispanic with a democratic voting record and VERY conservative social views. This confuses a lot of people. They think, oh a blue state...must be liberal. But you'd be very wrong...Hispanics, the MAJORITY of the NM and ALB populations, are very socially conservative...

Next, digit broadcasts via phones, internet, television, and satellite radio in Phoenix is huge. Phoenix is actually one of the top markets for such digital communication setups. This is true of NYC as well. There are some low rating liberal stations in NYC but mostly iPodcasts and the like are heavily used in Phoenix and NYC. Subscriber numbers for satellite radio also top markets in the two metro areas. Cable television is another top market gainer in these metro regions; think Bill Maher from HBO's Real Time...

Next are taxes and impact fees in Phoenix and Arizona...these are among the lowest in the country. They have actually been CUT with the exception of a few areas in Tucson and Flagstaff. Impact fees are almost NON-EXISTENT in Phoenix as the City usually pays a business the cost of the fees...It is pathetic. Arizona NEEDS to raise taxes and impact fees in order for business to HELP share the cost of their growing fortunes while the city and state struggle to close budget gaps. Taxes haven't been raised in some time and there is a fight at the State Capital right now to put a temporary tax increase on the ballot. Also, Arizona and especially Phoenix have consistently ranked number 1 for entrepreneurs and business start-ups in 2007, 2008, and again on pace in 2009 into '10. We were the number 1 city and state for small business start-ups and successful ventures last year as well. Flagstaff was ranked as one of the top 10 cities for the job market the first half of this year. Tom Lane, you have NO idea what you are talking about.

LOL, yeah that sounds like him. Baboonish ramblings and unfounded theories and conclusions. Sounds very uninformed and ignorant in his posts.

Well I guess I COULD (reluctantly) take this as a complement since I left Arizona and New Mexico.

Arizonans and people from the west coast are polar opposites on all of the political scales and personality scales, such as The United States of Mind survey.

As for that talk radio message board, they need to take that page down. It's run by someone in NM, which like Flagstaff, is a very regressive place to live.

I'm sure my very good friend and talk radio host Jay Diamond in Manhattan will have a good laugh when I forward him these posts

Please don't speak for me.

If that read 'some people', instead of 'people', I might agree. Which is why I plan on moving to AZ.
