Hi, I am considering living in Phoenix for 6 months in the winter. This is the after retirement. But, already I am getting cold feet when I think of heath care. How does that work for Canadians? Can someone who is a Canadian living in the US share this information with me. Do we have to buy insurance, and how much does is cost? After buying the insurance , do we need to pay deductible each time we visit the doctor?
Thanks a lot.

To the best of my knowledge, you would have two reasonable options. If you anticipate needing medical care on an ongoing basis, you would likely want to purchase an insurance policy that corresponds to your needs for the duration of your stay. If you are healthy and without ongoing medical needs, you might want to purchase a low cost, high deductible "emergency" policy for the time that you are here, and plan on returning to Canada if a health problem persists. All of the Canadian Citizens that I know of are afraid to visit the U.S. for any extended period without private health insurance, and I beleive that their fears are justified!

You are telling me exactly what I am afraid of. Probably it will be best to buy a policy for emergency with high deductible and for the smaller ailments just go to emergency. I would bring all the prescriptions for 3 months at a time, and go back and see the doctors in Canada.

Thank you so much for taking the time to give me info.

Please note: You want to avoid hospital emergency rooms for all except REAL emergencies! Here in the Phoenix area, and I expect, everywhere else in the U.S., there are a lot of "walk in" type clinics for urgent care needs that are not true emergencies. These will be MUCH less expensive than and E.R. I have used them and have been pleased.

Without Insurance 100.00 plus meds about 30.00 more. I just took my daughter a few months ago who doesn't have insurance to an urgent care and it cost 130.00 for the visit, an antibiotic, tylenol with codeine and prednisone. She had strep.
