I moved here in end of July-early August from the east coast. It took 3 days and I stayed overnight with friends in Ohio and with the 'rents in Oklahoma.

Ohio had the best highways. West Texas is huge and has this mega-wind farm that went on for MILES. New Mexico is gorgeous. Northern Arizona had this awesome lightning storm. People drove wicked fast around those mountains on the 17. I came down into the city, got to the new house, and fired up the AC, and camped out in the living room until the mover guys came and unloaded the pod.

It was a pretty good trip and I'll never forget it. There was nothing bad about coming in the summer. I figure, might as well face the heat now and get used to it.

Best of luck with your move and have a lot of fun!

Terrific. Another person moving here and flooding the state's already backed up system! There's already too many people here. Too many illegals absorbing what they want from the state. Too many out of work. Too many needing financial assistance from the state. The highways are already clogged. There's too many people coming here and its detroying the desert and ruining the state. And there's too many people here for the jobs. Could U please just stay away or move elsewhere? The grass is not greener here; its toally absent. Stay in your Minnesota town or move elsewhere. Just STAY AWAY.

Well, this guy doesn't sound like an illegal, does he? He seems to know English and he's intelligently researching the place on the internet before moving here.

How many illegal immigrants get on here and say "Hey, I'm from Central America and I'm living in a shanty town in northern Mexico, waiting for a coyote to escort me over the border for $5,000. Can anyone recommend a nice drop house for me to stay in and which Home Depot is the best one to hang out in front of, hoping for day work?"

It's hot, and you will def. need air conditioning in the car but you will survive. It's not that big of deal. Good luck on your move and bring "sun screen". lol Oh and those little covers for your steering wheel in your car, and those little sun shields you put up inside your car windshield. Turn you ac on 5 min before entering your car like people do with heater in other states. And most important of all bring your SWIMSUIT. lol

Don'ts" Don't leave anything in your car that you don't want to melt. Don't run barefoot to your car or anywhere else like the mail box. Thats what "flippies" are for.

Enjoy your move, regardless of the time of year!

i moved down with my gf (now wife) - she is a MN native and UMD grad - i'm a northeast guy, but lived in the cities for about a year

both of us made the trip in July - she drove down with her dad and I flew in a week later - that morning I got on the plane in mpls in 40 degree weather and stepped out into 115

however, you will need to experience it at some point and moving in July is better than moving in May

things to note - if something can melt or get damaged by the heat it's best to have it with you in a cool environment - some of the stuff we boxed and shipped didn't make it (although my wife did have a nice ball of candles)

try to do your actual moving at night - it will still be hot, but the sun won't be beating on you

put aside a couple hundred bucks for window tint on your car - it sounds like you have a vehicle with decent value that you want to keep for a while ...... they definitely help

flip flops by the door is a great call - if you have a bottle of water in your cupholder and you run into the store for 20 minutes you'll probably regret sipping that water - if something melts, don't leave it in your car for a long time (my wife ruined a pair of pants with melted chapstick) - a lot of little things you'll pick up

aside from that, get a map of the city (i recommend one of those laminated, streetwise ones) that you can keep in your car - get out and explore the metro

when we moved down we were pretty much dead broke - we used coupons for about everything, even entertainment like mini golf ........ took a while to get established, but it was a good experience for us

make an excuse to drive up to flagstaff or into the white mountains at some point in august

finally, find krock and give him the address to your old residence and reverse directions from your trip ...... it would balance out you moving here making your move transplant neutral while allowing him to get back to the great midwest - win/win

One more don't: don't leave a mirror in your car that is not an actual car part. . . I started a small fire and burned up some upholstery doing that, once. . . it's a good lesson not to have to learn for yourself!
