Our family will be visiting the area in mid July to visit the Grand Canyon for a few days. Afterwards we will probably be staying in Phoenix a few days before we leave. Any ideas on things that a family of 4 with 2 teenage boys could do/see while visiting Phoenix for the first time? We are open to almost anything.

Phoenix Zoo and Golfland/Sunsplash in Mesa,
Awesome rates at Scottsdale Resorts in July such as: Westin Kierland, Gainey Ranch which have waterslides, lazy rivers etc...,
A walk thru downtown Mill Ave and dinner at Gordon Biersch Brewery, and a drive thru ASU campus
Keep in mind how hot, hot, hot Phoenix is in July and carry water with you wherever you go.

On the way down to Phoenix, make sure you drive through Oak Creek Canyon!

Out of Africa is on the way heading south. A unique zoo. Take the safari and have the giraffes eat of your hand.

...and what everyone else said so far.....

Why? That would add like 2 hours to their trip if they go that route instead of the I-17.

I would suggest taking the detour though, but to see more than just the canyon, check out all of sedona !

If they aren't in a hurry to get to Phoenix, what's the problem? I'm not sure there's much in Sedona itself for teenage boys to be worth spending time in town, but the canyon drive and the drive on out to I-17 is still worth it.

I think there are great hikes in Sedona that teenage boys would like.

True. I was thinking of the shopping and such when the suggestion was made to "check out all of Sedona" -- I was thinking of the town itself, not the surrounding natural area. If they have time for hiking, it's definitely a good idea.
