We found this guy crawling up the wall by our back door. Anybody know what he is? He's about half an inch long not including his legs. His underside is completely black and his feet are also black. Recognize this picture?

Looks like a wolf or possibly a funnel web weaver of sorts, most likely a wolf. Harmless and beneficial to have around. Nice find!

As with Lizards, aren't all Spiders beneficial, Steve?

Wow. if 1/2 inch long is "huge", don't move to Albuquerque. It's Spider Central here and many are bigger than your little visitor. OTOH, thanks for posting - I've seen this stinker here and now I know what it is. Thanks!

Yep, it's a wolf spider.
Pretty much harmless but they can jump straight up in the air if startled. And I'm talking to face level. I found out once when I tried to stomp one and missed.
Now I just leave them alone or if it is in the house I try to catch them in a jar and put them outside.
Their bite can cause a welt or bump similar to a bee sting unless you have some uncommon alergic reaction.
Not lethal like a black widow can be.
