I'm not talking about locusts. They are huge flying beetles that I was always told were "palo verde" bugs. I exaggerated in the same manner you did about the south having bugs the size of birds trying to eat you.

LOL Lilina, they only seem blind but chase you haha, I was laughin' hard on that one!

Oh, I know what you mean, yeah those are nasty looking! But they are beetles, so they won't harm a fly, LOL! And, the OP won't run into them in Flagstaff, Sierra Vista, or many towns outside of some of the AZ deserts...

They're nothing! It's the tarantula hawks that make you scream!

Hey, I didn't realize that was from Texas. We have em here too. We had a boatload in our yard last summer.

I read something in the comments about West Texas, but I mistakenly jumped to conclusions when I saw the word Austin in the main article. I just realized now they were just referencing a kids name. So, I don't really know where its native.

I have never seen that one here before... and I'm kinda glad too

Flagstaff meets your criteria just fine. Good fishing in AZ is always going to be a challenge, but Flag has several lakes and Oak Creek nearby. There is excellent fishing on the Colorado River 3-4 hours away. Affordable housing could be a challenge depending on your situation. Start @ +/- $200k for something decent. Flag gets a lot of tourists in the summer which makes traffic a problem. Skiing in the winter also brings in a lot of people.

Affordable housing is the biggest challenge. Currently, the average list price for a home in Flagstaff is not $200k, but $433,111...

And ponderosa, those tarantula hawks are a nightmare from the looks of it! LOL, I'd be running my arse off if I saw one and luckily never have!

I think I have seen a similar bug at the Science Center, dead of course.

I had never seen one until last year either. Then I saw three or four over the course of the summer. The one in the pic was bigger than mine. I did some reading on them. Quite fascinating. They haul a tarantula out of its burrow and kill it. Then they put it back in its burrow and then lay a single egg on its abdomen. The adaptation of plants, insects and other animals to the harsh desert conditions never ceases to amaze me.

Have you seen an increase in their food source lately? Tarantulas? I've only seen one near my home in all the time I've lived here. I never thought I could feel bad for one of those ugly hairy spiders but it does seem like a tragic way to go, yikes!

Strange that they just started appearing near you for the first time this summer.

Maybe the lack of construction trucks stirring up dirt and destroying burrows is allowing the environment to recoop? Hope they start building again soon for ya before the desert reclaims Estrella!
