I wondered what those tall posts on the side of the road were when I was driving Thompson Pass while on vacation last year. I was told they were snow markers for winter driving Are those the tops I see sticking out from the snow ?

What's in my picture is the unplowed road to the Worthington Glacier visitor's center. The markers show where the road is so that in the spring it can be plowed correctly. The snow poles on the highway serve a similar purpose, but are much larger and have that right angle at the top that has reflectors on it and markings to show where the white line and the edge of the road are. Of course the plow trucks have finely-tuned GPS now, so they could still plow with zero visibility, but the poles are very useful for regular travelers and truckers, because Thompson Pass is notorious for poor visibility year-round, and sometimes when you're driving through there about all you can see is the reflection from the next snow pole or two in front of you. Wish I'd have taken a picture of it now, but yesterday when we were driving up there was a small avalanche nearly all the way across the road right where your picture was taken. It had come off that cliff to the left just a few minutes before we got there.
