I took my boys out to see where their Great, Great, Great Grandparents were buried and found the stones in this condition:
The kids were appalled because not only were they relatives, but he was a veteran as well, so they did a bit of work that afternoon.
Here are a couple of them in action, after we drove back into town to get the stuff needed to clean the stones right.
A Civil War magazine Editor and I were talking a bit later and they mentioned that it would be a great story if only there were photos to go along with it. My obsession with taking the camera almost everyplace I go came in handy and they are some of my first images to be run in a national mag (very small circulation, but it is still cool to me.) They are some of the first photos I ever took with my new camera last fall. Plus the boys made me darn proud that they would want to do that. I didn't even think of cleaning the stones, much to my shame.
Wow, how very humbling that story was! What great boys you have, I wish more kids were like that!
Great pictures everyone! I've only gotten through one page so far, but look forward to studying the rest. It's especially cool seeing the really old tombstones, since we don't get anything pre-19th century here in California... I always like visiting cemeteries when I'm back east, just to see how old they are. Anyway, here are a few old photos I dug up - no pun intended, LOL.

Thanks for sharing! I found that the image of a face in the photos I posted represents the soul. There are some additional symbols and engravings here..Gravestone Symbolism
